A Little Decoupage, a Little Fabric, and a Handmade Gift Exchange

I love handmade gift exchanges.

There is something special about making a little something with your own hands and knowing that somewhere else, another crafter is doing exactly the same thing for you.

This project actually brought me back to a craft I hadn't touched in years.

Rediscovering Decoupage

I first discovered decoupage long before I started blogging.

I made a few decorated pieces, experimented with bottles, collected napkins and supplies… and then, somehow, the enthusiasm quietly disappeared.

It wasn't that I didn't enjoy it.

I simply put everything aside for "better times."

You know how that goes.

Then one day I saw a little wooden box and suddenly thought:

I want to do this again.

Maybe it was a little bit of nostalgia.

Maybe I just missed making something with my hands in a completely different way.

Either way, the decoupage supplies came back out.

And Then I Glued the Box Shut…

Well.

Let's just say I needed a little reminder that crafting doesn't always go according to plan.

For the base, I used ordinary white school glue — PVA.

I've used this method for preparing wooden pieces before, and it has always worked well for me.

Except this time, I got a little too enthusiastic with the glue.

Somehow I managed to glue the lid to the box.

Yes.

The actual lid.

Completely stuck.

My husband had to come to the rescue.

Luckily, he was incredibly careful and managed to separate the two pieces without damaging the box.

So, thankfully, no craft supplies — or family members — were harmed in the making of this project.

Choosing the Details

After that little adventure, the fun part began.

I spent quite a while choosing the napkin, colors, and decorative elements.

I always find this part harder than it looks.

There are so many possibilities, and sometimes you can have a very clear idea in your head… until you put everything together and realize that it doesn't quite work.

Eventually, I stopped overthinking it and went with what I liked.

And this is what I ended up with.

A Simple Inside

I kept the inside much simpler.

Instead of adding more decoration, I simply painted it.

I actually like the contrast between the decorated outside and the quiet, simple interior.

Sometimes a project doesn't need every surface covered with details.

A Little Extra Handmade Gift

But the box wasn't the only thing I made for this exchange.

I also had some beautiful green satin fabric left over, so naturally I couldn't let it go to waste.

I turned the leftovers into little hair ties.

And those went to the daughter of the lovely crafter I was exchanging gifts with.

I love when leftover materials find a second life.

A small piece of fabric that might otherwise end up in a drawer became another little handmade gift.

Handmade Gifts Are Never Just Things

That's probably what I love most about craft exchanges.

The finished object is only part of the story.

There is the time spent choosing materials.

The little mistakes.

The unexpected solutions.

The scraps that become something else.

And all the thoughts that go into making something specifically for another person.

This little box may not be perfect.

And believe me, I certainly had a few moments with it. 😊

But it was made by hand, with plenty of thought and a little bit of laughter along the way.

And that's what makes handmade gifts special.

Materials I Used

For this project, I used:

  • a small wooden box

  • a decorative paper napkin

  • PVA white glue

  • acrylic paint

  • small decorative embellishments

  • green satin fabric

  • elastic hair ties

  • scissors

  • a glue gun for attaching some of the details

You don't need a huge collection of supplies for a project like this.

A simple wooden box and a beautiful napkin can be enough to get started.

My Crafting Takeaway

If there is one thing this project reminded me of, it's that it's never too late to return to an old hobby.

Sometimes a craft simply needs a little time away.

And sometimes all it takes is seeing one pretty little box to make you want to pick up the supplies again.

Even if you accidentally glue the lid shut.

Final Thoughts

I'm glad I gave decoupage another chance.

It may not become my everyday craft — I have far too many ideas involving embroidery, crochet, and sewing waiting for me — but it was fun to return to something I hadn't done in years.

And perhaps that's another lovely thing about handmade projects.

They can wait for us.

A craft can sit quietly on a shelf for years, and when we finally come back to it, the pleasure is still there.

Sometimes even the old hobbies have something new to teach us.
